Marine Invertebrate MNI Analysis

The data files MNI-MARINOS.TXT and MNI-MARINOS.XLS provide marine invertebrate counts for the four excavated units (6A, 6B, 8 and 9) by Stratigraphic Unit (S.U.). The remains were identified at the species (in italics) and family (in upper case) levels. For the MNI a series of indicators were applied according to their class. For bivalves left and right hinges were counted using the largest number as the MNI. For Gastropods the apices and columellas were counted using the largest number as the MNI. For the Fissurellae (keyhole limpets) family, the apex with the oval hole was considered as MNI. For the Chitonidae (chitons) family, composed of eight plates, the MNI for this class was estimated dividing the number of plates by 8. MNI-MARINOS.TXT is a comma delimited ASCII text file, while MNI-MARINOS.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line in the ASCII file corresponds to a unique stratigraphic unit (S.U.). There are 548 lines, each with 34 variables separated by commas. The variables are listed in the following order:

1 Stratigraphic Unit (S.U.). A natural or cultural layer or feature, sequentially numbered within an excavation unit, where the alphanumeric part to the left of the period identifies the unit, and the digits to the right of the period identify the layer or feature.
2 MNI counts of Argopecten purpuratus specimens, a bivalve of the PECTINIDAE family.
3 MNI counts of Aulacomya ater specimens, a bivalve of the MYTILIDAE family.
4 MNI counts of Choromytilus chorus specimens, a bivalve of the MYTILIDAE family.
5 MNI counts of Mesodesma donacium specimens, a bivalve of the MESODESMATIDAE family.
6 MNI counts of Mulinia edulis specimens, a bivalve of the MACTRIDAE family.
7 MNI counts of Perumytilus purpuratus specimens, a bivalve of the MYTILIDAE family.
8 MNI counts of Semimytilus algosus specimens, a bivalve of the MYTILIDAE family.
9 MNI counts of Protothaca sp. specimens, a bivalve of the VENERIDAE family.
10 MNI counts of COllisella orbignyi specimens, a gastropod of the ACMAEIDAE family.
11 MNI counts of Collisella orbignyi specimens, a gastropod of the ACMAEIDAE family.
12 MNI counts of Scurria sp. specimens, a gastropod of the ACMAEIDAE family.
13 MNI counts of Concholepas concholepas specimens, a gastropod of the THAIDADAE family.

18 MNI counts of Tegula atra specimens, a gastropod of the TROCHIDAE family.
19 MNI counts of Xanthochorus buxea specimens, a gastropod of the THAIDADAE family.
20 MNI counts of Thais haemastoma specimens, a gastropod of the THAIDADAE family.
21 MNI counts of Thais sp. specimens, a gastropod of the THAIDADAE family.
22 MNI counts of Trophon peruvianus specimens, a gastropod of the MURICIDAE family.
23 MNI counts of Oliva peruviana specimens, a gastropod of the OLIVIDAE family.
24 MNI counts of Mitrella unifasiata specimens, a gastropod of the COLLUMBELLIDAE family.

33 MNI counts of Pattalus mollis specimens, an echinoderm of the PHYLLOPHORIDAE family.
34 Total MNI counts of marine invertebrate remains per Stratigraphic Unit.

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

6A.2,1,,1,3,4,1,,,,,,2,,4,9,,,,,,2,,,,,,,,,,,,27

Which means that the marine invertebrate remains came from S.U. 6A.2. One MNI of Argopecten purpuratus (Family: PECTINIDAE), 1 MNI of Choromytilus chorus (Family: MYTILIDAE), 3 MNI of Mesodesma donacium (Family: MESODESMATIDAE), 4 MNI of Mulinia edulis (Family: MACTRIDAE), 1 MNI of Perumytilus purpuratus (Family: MYTILIDAE), 2 MNI of Crepipatella sp. (Family: CALYPTRAEIDAE), 4 MNI of Nassarius gayi (Family: NASSARIIDAE), 9 MNI of Polinices uber (Family: NATICIDAE), and 2 MNI of Oliva peruviana (Family: OLIVIDAE) were identified. A total of 27 MNI counts were identified in this S.U.

The last, or 548th line of the ASCII text file is:

9.46,,,,1,1,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,1,,,,3

Which means that the marine invertebrate remains came from S.U. 9.46. One MNI of Mesodesma donacium (Family: MESODESMATIDAE), 1 MNI of Mulinia edulis (Family: MACTRIDAE), and 1 MNI of Balanus sp. (Family: BALANIDAE) were identified. A total of 3 MNI counts were identified in this S.U.
