Listing of Survey Collection Units

The data files SURVUNITS.TXT and SURVUNITS.XLS contain data on all survey collection units located on the corresponding maps. SURVUNITS.TXT is a comma delimited ASCII text file, which should be easy to import into spreadsheet, database, and statistical programs for manipulation and analysis. SURVUNITS.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet which is easier to browse, and can also be imported into many programs. Each line represents one survey collection unit. There are 3455 lines, each with 9 variables separated by commas. The variables are, in the following order:

1 Survey tract--Two numeric characters designating a subunit of the overall survey area
2 Team--A single letter designating the survey team within the tract that recorded the unit
3 Collection unit number--A three-digit number designating the collection unit itself (sequential beginning with 1 for each team in each tract)
4 Key--A combination of the survey tract number, the team letter, and the collection unit number for a unique text string that identifies each collection unit (corresponds to the text string that identifies the collection unit on the maps)
5 Site--The number of the site to which the collection unit belongs
6 Surface visibility--Subjective assessment of the vegetation cover in the area in which the collection was made:
H = high visibility
M = medium visibility
L = low visibility
blank = missing data
7 Collection method--The way in which the collection was made (see Chapter 4):
G = general
S = systematic
blank = missing data
8 Number of collection circles--The number of circles 3 m in diameter from which the collection was made if systematic (blank indicates general collection or missing data)
9 Remarks--Notes about feature associations or other idiosyncrasies

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

00,A,1,00A001,644,M,S,1,

This means that the data belong to the survey tract 00, they were recorded by team A, and their collection unit number is 1. Together, these three designations produce the key number 00A001. The site number to which the collection belongs is 644, and the surface visibility was medium. It was a systematic collection with one collection circle. There are no additional remarks for this collection unit.

The last, or 3455th line of the ASCII text file is:

99,E,147,99E147,553,H,G,,

This means that the data belong to the survey tract 99, they were recorded by team E, and their collection unit number is 147. Together, these three designations produce the key number 99E147. The site number to which the collection belongs is 553, and the surface visibility was high. It was a general collection, and hence had no collection circles. There are no additional remarks for this collection unit.
