The data files LITHICS.TXT and LITHICS.XLS contain data on all lithic artifacts recovered in the stratigraphic testing. LITHICS.TXT is a comma delimited ASCII text file, which should be easy to import into spreadsheet, database, and statistical programs for manipulation and analysis. LITHICS.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet which is easier to browse, and can also be imported into many programs. Each line represents one artifact. Excavation units that yielded more than one lithic artifact thus have more than one line in these data files. Excavation units that yielded no lithic artifacts do not appear at all. There are 443 lines, each with 8 variables separated by commas. The variables are, in the following order:
1 | Key--a combination of the site number, "X", and the excavation unit number for a unique text string that identifies each excavation unit. Corresponds to the key in the listing of excavation units, and thus links individual artifacts to provenience data. |
2 | Tool type--a numeric code, see separate listing |
3 | Flaked: 1=yes, 0=no |
4 | Ground: 1=yes, 0=no |
5 | Tool condition--a numeric code, see separate listing |
6 | Cortex: 1=present, 0=absent |
7 | Utilized: 1=yes, 0=no |
8 | Comment |
The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:
674X001,1,1,0,4,0,0,
This means that the artifact belongs to the excavation unit with the key 674X001, and the tool type code is 1 (flake). The artifact was flaked but not ground. The condition code is 4 (complete). Cortex is not present, and there is no evidence of utilization. There is no comment for this artifact.
The last, or 443rd line of the ASCII text file is:
674X001,1,1,0,4,1,0,
This means that the artifact belongs to the excavation unit with the key 674X001, and the tool type code is 1 (flake). The artifact was flaked but not ground. The condition code is 4 (complete). The artifact displays cortex, but no evidence of utilization. There is no comment for this artifact.
