Plant Remains from Stratigraphic Tests

The data files FLORA.TXT and FLORA.XLS contain data on all plant remains recovered from flotation samples in the stratigraphic testing. FLORA.TXT is a comma delimited ASCII text file, which should be easy to import into spreadsheet, database, and statistical programs for manipulation and analysis. FLORA.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet which is easier to browse, and can also be imported into many programs. Each line represents one excavation unit. Excavation units from which no flotation sample was collected do not appear at all. There are 90 lines, each with 25 variables separated by commas. The variables are, in the following order:

1 Key--a combination of the site number, "X", and the excavation unit number for a unique text string that identifies each excavation unit. Corresponds to the key in the listing of excavation units, and thus links individual flotation samples to provenience data.
2 Period--chronological period to which the excavation unit is assigned
3 Volume--volume of soil in the flotation sample (in liters)
4 Carbonized wood--weight of carbonized wood (g)

6 Blighted Foxtail Millet--number of specimens of blighted foxtail millet (Setaria italica)

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

342X046,LXJD,1.50,0.022,2,,,,,,,2,,,,1,,,,,,,,,1

This means that the excavation unit key is 342X046, which was assigned to the Lower Xiajiadian Period. The volume of soil in the flotation sample was 1.5 liters, which contained .022 grams of carbonized wood. The flotation sample yielded 2 specimens of Setaria italica (unblighted), 2 specimens of unidentified Poaceae, 1 specimen of unidentified Leguminosae, and 1 unidentified botanical remain. No other specimens were recovered.

The last, or 90th line of the ASCII text file is:

674X059,uncertain,0.60,0.278,34,,3,,,,,,3,,,,,,,,,,,,

This means that the excavation unit key is 674X059, of uncertian period. The volume of soil in the flotation sample was 0.60 liters, which contained .278 grams of carbonized wood. The flotation sample yielded 34 specimens of Setaria italica (unblighted), 3 specimens of Panicum Miliaceum (unblighted), and 3 specimens of unidentified Poaceae. No other specimens were recovered.
