Las Vegas Fauna Dataset |
The files MOLLUSKS.TXT and MOLLUSKS.XLS provide the MNI of each specie within each excavated context at the various Vegas sites. MOLLUSKS.TXT is a comma delimited ASCII text file; MOLLUSKS.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line in the ASCII file represents one excavation context. There are 353 lines, each with 135 variables separated by commas. The variables are listed in the following order:
1 | Site number |
2 | Unit number (new context number). See the following PDF for a reconciliation of trench locations to new context numbers. For the location of the original context designations, please refer to Figure 1.5 of the publication associated with this dataset. |
3 | Chalkiness 0 = not chalky 1 = chalky 2 = very chalky blank = not recorded |

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:
38,38-4000,,463,0.0095,38,139,1858.9,8928.9,146,31.53,297.2,3.33,52,11.23,105.8,1.18,2,19,25,25,970,202,7070.0,8145.8
,91.23,126,,1,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,6,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,1,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,5,,,,,,,,,,
This means that the site number is 38, the unit (context) number is 38-4000, which had 463 total pieces of shell. The fragmentation index for the unit is 0.0095. The total MNI of the unit is 38, but it is 139 if we include the discarded Anandara shells. The total weight of all the mollusks within the unit is 1858.9 g. There are 146 pieces of unidentified fragments, which are 31.53% of the total pieces. Their weight is 297.2 g, which is 3.33% of the total weight. There are 52 pieces of Anandara tuberculosa, which are 11.23% of the total pieces. Their weight is 105.8 g, which is 1.18% of the total weight. The estimated number of individuals of Anadara tuberculosa fragments is 2. There are 19 right valves and 25 left valves of Anadara tuberculosa. Their combined MNI is 25 and their weight is 970 g. 202 of the Anadara tuberculosa valves were discarded, with an estimated weight of 7070.0 g. The total weight of all Anadara tuberculosa fragments and valves is 8145.8 g, which constitutes 91.23% of the total weight, and an estimated MNI of 126. The unit also has 1 MNI of Arcidae (anagra), 6 MNI of Veneridae (megaur), 1 MNI of Melongenidae (melpat), and 5 MNI of Turbinidae (tursax).
The last, or 353rd line of the ASCII text file is:
203,203-600,2,159,0.0199,40,40,1140.1,1140.1,9,5.66,28.0,2.46,51,32.08,112.1,9.83,2,37,34,37,884.5,0,0.0,996.6,87.41,37
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,1,1,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,1,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
This means that the site number is 203, the unit (context) number is 203-600, which had 152 total pieces of shell. The unit context is very chalky. The fragmentation index for the unit is 0.0199. The total MNI of the unit is 40, it is also 40 if we include the discarded Anandara shells. The total weight of all the mollusks within the unit is 1140.1 g. There are 9 pieces of unidentified fragments, which are 5.66% of the total pieces. Their weight is 28.0 g, which is 2.46% of the total weight. There are 51 pieces of Anandara tuberculosa, which are 32.08% of the total pieces. Their weight is 112.1 g, which is 9.83% of the total weight. The estimated number of individuals of Anadara tuberculosa fragments is 2. There are 37 right valves and 34 left valves of Anadara tuberculosa. Their combined MNI is 37 and their weight is 884.5 g. The total weight of all Anadara tuberculosa fragments and valves is 996.6 g, which constitutes 87.41% of the total weight, and an estimated MNI of 37. The unit also has 1 MNI of Ostreidae (crasp), 1 MNI of Pectinidae (arcclr), and 1 MNI of Cypraeidae (cypsp).
