Avifauna Inventory

The files AVI.TXT and AVI.XLS provide the taxa information about each bird specimen recovered within site OGSE-80. AVI.TXT is a comma delimited ASCII text file; AVI.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line in the ASCII file represents one specimen. There are 279 lines, each with 14 variables separated by commas. The variables are listed in the following order:

1 Order
2 Family
3 cf.="compares to" (compares well to species but with some uncertainty)
4 Genus
5 Species
6 Bone Element
7 Part of Bone
8 Side
9 Trench
10 Quadrat (Section)
11 Depth (cm) below datum
12 Specimen number
13 Date collected
14 Additional notes

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

Gruiformes,Rallidae,,Porzana,carolinensis,Coracoid,Whole,left,CH,111-112,150-160,,7/31/1979,

This means that the specimen belongs to the Order Gruiformes, Family Rallidae, Genus Porzana, Specie carolinesnsis. The bone element is a Coracoid, which is whole, and belongs to the left side. It was recovered on trench CH, quadrat 111-112, at a depth of 150-160 cm below datum on 7/31/1979.

The last, or 279th line of the ASCII text file is:

Columbiformes,Columbidae,cf.,Leptotila,verreauxi,Ulna,Proximal,left,D-E,110,125-145,,7/26/1979,Spacing of cubital tubercles fits L. verreauxi the best. Due to the high degree of fragmentation the ID is tentative and somewhat intuitive.

This means that the specimen belongs to the Order Columbiformes, Family Columbidae, cf. Genus Leptotila, Specie verreauxi. The bone element is a proximal ulna from the left side. It was recovered on trench D-E, quadrat 110, at a depth of 125-145 cm below datum on 7/26/1979. Additional notes read "Spacing of cubital tubercles fits L. verreauxi the best. Due to the high degree of fragmentation the ID is tentative and somewhat intuitive."
